******Update – extensive replies about the intention of the modern comic canon above and here
Let's ban the escape clause of the right to be ‘politically incorrect' and have nothing to do with racist comedians and their free speech symapthisers
"I asked him [Peter Kay] if it wasn't a bit racist and he said ‘we can get away with it, they're Chinese' - fat cunt" Paraphrasing of Daniel Kitson, from his stand-up act last year
From CNN asking the new Black Muslim Congressman if he's down with Osama, to Nick Griffin getting away with recorded race hate and John Reid having a go at Asian kids before they're out of first school, in realworld the politically (in)correct debate has never been more live and there has never been so much at stake, which gives mediators even greater responsibility to make sure they're being accountable.
Mainstream British comedians, some schooled in alternative comedy circles, others always populist and proud of it (regenerating ignorance in the mass commercial market the only vindicator, like a comic Oasis), are increasingly turning to cheap and nasty racist innuendo as part of their act. Some will attempt to justify their prejudice; others just try to get away with it.
It's not just your Kays. There's Sacha Baron-Cohen kicking Kazakhs and Americans in the teeth (and thinking he's making a point), Gervais & Merchant routinely taking the piss out of anyone who isn't white and able-bodied and Jimmy Carr reinforcing the national psyche by doing cheap gags about gypsies.

The latest edition of Private Eye has a page devoted to Lord Hutton's recent 26-page defence of his Review's findings, under the headline: “Hutton dressed as sham”
I believe we got there first with that one, three years ago at the time of the report in fact. Now we're going to make like Tony and fuck off to some other country's inquiry. |

Madonna on Newsnite was a foul piece of media manipulation. Controlled ambience, carefully selected ebony and ivory hues, candles in the background (my wife wouldn't let me use them when I'm feeding 'our' kids). But it was also a hopeless stunt, as most people with brains realise adopting the Malawi villager has no moral justification at all when it comes wrapped in PR exercises and sub-Bono/Geldof IMF rhetoric of saving the world's poor. Speaking like you're from Esher will also not help. What a pitifully self-serving individual Madge the Vadge is, making poverty history for one child... She is a supremely desperate piece of shite, justifying cultural kidnap. and why are the BBC (ergo, us) giving her a platform to justify cultural kidnap? Because they think Heat magazine is important because a lot of people buy it. I bet the littl'un will be well keen to head back into his ‘poverty-stricken rural life' after a few years of obscene comfort after a few years of obscene comfort and asphyxiating media glare (in the hope of something ‘going wrong with his mind'). Actually, considering Snatch man Guy Ritchie will be doing the tender handling, he could be tempted. Nature v nurture in the hideous moral parameters of the seething, post-colonial, Shropshire drinks lounge. Some important questions have been overlooked by all media commentators except this (now preening) one. They are: * will Guy Ritichie be able or have to stop referring to black people as ‘lemonades'? * will the young lad be leased to the Conservative party to help Vinnie Jones' General Election campaign to provide misleading hints at the candidate's belief in diversity and multiculturalism (without actually saying it)? * why hasn't David Blunkett commented on the consequences for immigration amongst the under 3s? Just where did Vadge get the idea from to shop for a really poor child? After all, ‘She has no ideas of her own', as Boy George has accurately and repeatedly observed. Could it have originated from the ideas factory that is Mills & Boon reject and putative Mayor of London, Tom Conti? They both refuse to pay the congestion charge, command the respect of Paul Dacre and reek of petulant bigotry.
The whole odious spectacle highlighted in phosphorous the hysterical attitudes towards the chil-d-ren exhibited by their owner-stakeholders and their representatives in politics and the media, most of whom also have righteousness on their side because they lease kids too. The views range from preserve-them-in-aspic protectionism directed towards the 0-10 range, through to wildly inconsistent initiatives to alienate the kidults from the world we uphold in order to stop them becoming evil. “Long nostalgic for the comforting verities of a simpler time, today’s liberal intellectuals have at last discovered a sense of purpose: they are at war with ‘Islamo-fascism’… “ Excellent LRB piece on the Western liberals appeasing imperialist doctrine and fighting against the (risibly simplistic) global struggle against the new evil |
